Burns Survivors on Social Media: An Analysis of Recent Trends

Abstract

Background:

Social media platforms have changed the landscape for information sharing, including for the survivors of major burns. TikTok and Instagram have become a popular platform for burns survivors to connect, seek advice, share resources, and raise awareness about burn injuries. Many users create videos showcasing their journeys, sharing tips for burn recovery, and promoting body positivity. Hashtags such as #burnsurvivor and #burnrecovery are commonly used to connect with others in the burns survivor community on social media. It is important for clinicians working in burns centres to remain aware of current social media trends amongst this patient population.

Methods:

The content, themes, engagement statistics of burns survivors on Instagram and TikTok from 2018-2022 were reviewed.

Results:

Engagement statistics of burns survivors posting on Tik Tok and Instagram has increased noticeably in recent years. The burns survivors on social media to connect with other survivors, share their recovery story and promote body positivity with a wider audience.

Conclusions:

The potential positive impact of social media for the burns survivor community is significant. Burns survivors can use social media to raise awareness about burn injuries, promote understanding, and advocate for improved burn care and prevention. By sharing their stories and experiences, they can educate others about the physical, emotional, and psychological aspects of burn recovery. Moreover, social media platforms provide a sense of community where burns survivors can share their stories, seek advice, and find emotional support from individuals who understand their unique challenges.
