Abstract

Background
Continuing education is necessary to ensure we are providing our patients with up to date, evidenced based, gold standard care. How this is provided can pose a challenge to all clinicians while also dealing with their clinical workload. COVID brought about many challenges to the traditional model of face-to-face care, and medical education, introducing a new era of online interactions and collaboration with other health services.
Discussion
A survey was distributed to nursing staff within the main regional and rural centres of Queensland to establish their current knowledge of paediatric burns care. 68 surveys were completed from 19 centres. Over 75% of respondents did not feel confident in assessing paediatric burns and 60% did not feel confident in dressing a burn. This identified a need to create an education package that enabled regional and rural clinicians to provide the same gold standard care our paediatric patients receive within our tertiary facility.
Result
After the successful development of an on-line Burns Physiotherapy program through Articulate 360 [software, Articulate.com], we created a Management of Paediatric Burns package. This package provides access to all doctors and nurses with pertinent information on assessment of burns, dressing burns, surgical interventions, scar management while also providing access to fact sheets for parents and prevention information. It includes videos and short quizzes to reinforce learning and is accessible to any clinicians within the public and private setting through ilearn, an online management system that hosts workplace training programs.
