Abstract:

Background

Exploring other AHA’s roles within outpatient settings at QCH, it was identified that the Burns AHA role could be better utilised to assist in clinical care. This presentation will explore, the use of increased AHA input across hand burn occupation-based observation, assessment and procedural anxiety within the outpatient burns clinics. As well as how it has improved the efficiency and effectiveness of service delivery.

Aim

Evolve the AHA role within paediatric burns setting, to encompass a full scope of practice by building capability to improve burn care outcomes and department flow.

Method

AHA’s screen for potential patients (hand injury or those with identified procedural anxiety) within the outpatient clinic. OT’s delegate the need for Upper Limb play or procedural support for AHA to carry out session. Data collection spreadsheets being utilised to capture patient engagement and questionnaires to be created to gauge satisfaction with AHA input.

Results

Data collected since February 2022, demonstrates AHA involvement within paediatric burns is increasing with patients aged 10mths to 6yrs, with 1-3yrs having the greatest input.

Consumer feedback questionnaires will be provided to key stakeholders (patient’s families, nursing, and OTs) to understand the benefit/impact of the AHA role in paediatric burns.

Future Implications

The purpose of having an AHA in a paediatric burns setting, is to improve the efficiency and effectiveness of the AHA and OT service, enhancing the experiences of patients and families within the burns outpatient clinic and evolving and cementing the AHA role within paediatric burns.
