Abstract:

Background:

The Tasmanian Burns Unit conducted a review of facial burns resources in January 2022. Feedback received concentrated on the need for additional resources relating to mouth splinting and paediatric specific resources. This highlighted the need to support new staff with resources that were available after hours when senior nursing and speech pathology staff may not be available.

Method:

A review of the current facial burn’s resources available to staff within the unit was conducted. The information collected from this process allowed us to identify current resources that we needed to review and update and areas that currently had limited resources that may benefit from the development of educational material. Using a multidisciplinary teams approach we worked in collaboration with the speech pathology department.

Results:

The following resources were created or updated:

  • Inpatient Facial Burns chart update
  • Facial Burn Splinting fact sheet
  • Paediatric Facial Exercise chart
  • Update of Adult Facial Burns Exercise chart to include images & instructions on active assisted stretching

Conclusion:

The aim of this project was to increase the resource portal available within the Tasmanian Burns Service. We hope the updates to the pre-existing educational material combined with the additional resources will assist staff in increasing their knowledge about care and management of facial burns patients and provide a resource for staff afterhours on the Burns Unit and in intensive care.
