Abstract:
The North Queensland Paediatric Burns Service(NQPBS), based in Townsville, is one of two paedatric burns services in Queensland, covering an area of 780,000 square kilometers stretching from South of Mackay all the way up to the Torres Straight Islands and west to the Northern Territory border. All burns are discussed at a weekly Multidisciplinary Care Conference (MDCC), constructed of staff paediatric surgeons, junior surgical staff, allied health, nursing staff, and paediatric intensive care specialist. We have conducted a 5-year retrospective review for all paediatric burns managed by NQPBS from 2016-2020. Data has then been compared to published paediatric burns data by the Burns Registry of Australia and New Zealand (BRANZ), highlighting unique aspects of burns encountered in North Queensland as compared to that of the rest of Australia and New Zealand.
