While the medical treatment of burns can trace its roots all the way back to ancient Greece, the surgical management of burn undoubtedly started with Ambroise Pare, the Gentle surgeon, in the 16th Century. By the turn of the 19th Century, as the Napoleonic Wars were well underway, Guillaume Dupytrens, widely regarded as the father of plastic surgery, described a classification system for burns and later went onto describe debridement in burns surgery. The next big surgical development came with the first successful autologous transplant of skin during World War 1 under the guidance of Dr Harold Gillies, which set the stage for future advance in burns surgery that we utilise today.  It was not until after World War II, that a renewed interest in burns physiology came about and burns management was transformed into the multidisciplinary approach that it is today.
