Aronson Associate Clinical Professor of Burn Care Weill Cornell Medice

James Gallagher, M.D. FACS FABA Aronson Associate Professor of Burn Care at the William Randolph Hearst Burn Center at New York-Presbyterian Hospital and Weill Cornell Medicine in New York City. After completing General Surgery training, he spent four years in private practice in a small village in New York State before moving his family to Cameroon, West Africa. For more than a year, Dr. Gallagher was the sole surgeon in the rural missionary hospital. On return, he completed fellowships in surgical critical care, trauma, and burn surgery before accepting a position at The Shriners Burns Hospital for Children and the adult Blocker Burn Unit at the University of Texas Medical Branch Galveston. In 2009, Dr. Gallagher and his family returned to New York City, and he rejoined the team where he had trained. In 2011, he began regular visits to Mwanza, Tanzania to develop acute burn care capacity at the Bugando Medical Center. Today, at Bugando the department of Plastic Reconstruction and Burn Surgery includes a full-service Burn and reconstructive unit with expert team that serves their community. The unit is integrated into the local medical center and receives no external operational support. Dr. Gallagher continues his relationship with regular visits to the center. He is committed to teaching and sharing his expertise in burn and global surgery with the goal of improving burn care, preventing burn injuries, and building surgical capacity throughout the world.
