Steven Boyce, PhD, serves currently as Professor in the Department of Surgery at the University of Cincinnati College of Medicine, and as Senior Investigator in the Research Department of the Shriners Hospitals for Children – Cincinnati.  He trained in the Department of Molecular, Cellular and Developmental Biology at the University of Colorado, and spent his post-doctoral years in the Department of Surgery at the University of California San Diego.  With interests and expertise in engineering of model systems for anatomy and physiology of human skin, Dr. Boyce has designed, characterized and tested engineered skin substitutes consisting of autologous human skin cells and degradable biopolymer scaffolds for closure of severe burns, reconstructive surgery, chronic wounds.  Continuing investigations with advanced models of engineered skin are focused on restoration of cutaneous pigmentation, and regeneration of hair and glands after grafting of full-thickness wounds.

Mr Peter Dziewulski FFICM, FRCS, FRCS (Plast) is a Consultant Plastic & Reconstructive Surgeon.  He has held a Consultant post at the St Andrews Centre for Plastic Surgery & Burns, Broomfield Hospital, Chelmsford, Essex since 1998, and is Clinical Director of the Burns Unit.

He is a Hon Clinical Lecturer at The Centre for Cutaneous Research, Institute of Cell and Molecular Science, Queen Mary’s College, University of London and a Visiting Professor at StAAR based at the Post Graduate Medical Institute, Anglia Ruskin University, Essex.

He trained in Plastic Surgery in Yorkshire, Newcastle and Texas, U.S.A. and has a special interest in burn management.  He belongs to the Court of Examiners at the Royal College of Surgeons, England. He is a past Chairman of the British Burns Association and is on the Editorial Committee of the Burns Journal.

Dr. Garner is an internationally renowned expert in the science and treatment of wounds and the scars that result from them. This is based on his clinical experience in the treatment of traumatic injuries, particularly burn injuries, and correcting the deformities that result from them. He is the Director of the LAC+USC Burn Center where he directs a multidisciplinary team which treats patients with burn and other traumatic skin injuries. With the treatment of these patients Dr. Garner has developed specialized expertise and experience in the treatment of the scars and deformities that result from these injuries. He is also an expert in the treatment of numerous other wound healing abnormalities of poorly healing wounds and injuries.  In addition, Dr. Garner and his research team investigate wound healing and scar formation in the laboratory and have receive numerous federal (NIH) and industrial grants to study why wounds heal, why they do not heal and treatments for them. He has been an officer, committee chair of Board member of the Wound Healing Society, American Society of Plastic Surgeons and Plastic Research Council.

Professor Dr John Greenwood AM works full-time in burn care as the Medical Director of the Adult Burn Centre of the Royal Adelaide Hospital in Adelaide, South Australia, the only American Burn Association/American College of Surgeons Verified Burn Centre outside North America. His other posts include Director of the TGA-licensed Skin Engineering Laboratory and Professor in the Discipline of Surgery, School of Medicine, University of Adelaide.

He has been working on the development of skin replacement products utilising the NovoSorb biodegradable polyurethane platform since 2004, following a structured programme of studies, both in-vitro and in-vivo, completing 3 pilot human trials and generating 17 papers and 2 book chapters, a small part of his 120+ publications. His BTM, used routinely at the Royal Adelaide Hospital, is regulated and in use in the USA for surgical wounds, and being trialled in Australia and the US for the treatment of major burns. His CCS will reach human trials in 2018 following the recent completion of his bioreactor.

He was appointed Member of the Order of Australia (AM) following his work leading Australia’s only Burns Assessment Team after the 2002 Bali Bombings. He was awarded the inaugural Doctor of Health Sciences higher post-graduate degree in 2013 for a thesis documenting his establishment of the Adult Burn Service in South Australia. He was the 2016 Hunterian Professor of the Royal College of Surgeons of England and the 2016 South Australian ‘Australian of the Year’.

Dr William Norbury MBBS, MMS, FRCS(Plast) is an Assistant Professor of the Department of Plastic Surgery at the University of Texas Medical Branch and Staff Surgeon at Shriners Hospital, Galveston. He received his medical degree at the University of London, completed Plastic Surgery training in the UK and clinical research fellowship in Shriners Hospital, Galveston. He completed clinical fellowships in Acute Burns Care and Reconstructive Burns Surgery at the University of Texas Medical Branch and Shriners Hospital, Galveston, and Laser surgery in Swansea, and was an Attending Plastic Surgeon in the UK. He has a special interest in burns and burn reconstruction, in particular the application of lasers in burns scarring.

Nichola is Professor of Appearance Psychology and Co-Director of the Centre for Appearance Research, University of the West of England, Bristol, UK.  Following the completion of her PhD “Psychological Problems Associated with Facial Disfigurement” in 1983, Nichola has built an international reputation for research in this field, attracted over £9m in research funding and has published widely. She was British Psychological Society Consultant to the UK Government’s Department of Health 2004-2010, is an Honorary Life Member of the South African Burns Society and an Honorary Life Member of the British Association of Aesthetic Plastic Surgeons (BAAPS).  Her current projects include identifying the psychological factors contributing to resilience and distress in people affected by visible differences and developing interventions to improve outcomes in those adversely affected; interventions to promote positive societal attitudes towards diversity in appearance; screening and follow-up of patients seeking cosmetic surgery.   She is Chair of the EU funded COST Action IS1210 “Appearance Matters”, a network of researchers and practitioners from 35 European countries and a member of the Nuffield Bioethics Council’s Working Party on Cosmetic Procedures.  Nichola was appointed OBE in 2016 for services to people with disfigurement.

Brett is an Adjunct Associate Professor at James Cook University where he provides expert advice and education on disaster management systems and concepts.

Through James Cook University, Brett was recently involved in a project, led by the World Health Organisation, exploring global best practice associated with public health Emergency Operations Centres.

He has an extensive disaster management background coupled with experience at the State and National level which includes performing senior operational and leadership roles during the the H1N1 pandemic and the 2011 Queensland floods. Brett also performed a significant role throughout the Victorian Black Saturday bushfires in Australia and was awarded the National Emergency Medal for his efforts in helping to lead the whole-of-health response.

Allan retired from the University of Adelaide in June 2013 after 10 years as a Learning Designer with the eLearning Team. He has a background in print production, publishing and marketing. He was recognised as an Apple Distinguished Educator (Class of 2009) and has won two major Learning and Teaching Awards.  Allan has been awarded the 2012 Office of Learning and Teaching (OLT) Australian Citation for Outstanding Contributions to Student Learning.  His citation read: “For sustained commitment to inspiring, challenging and mentoring academics to teach with activity-centric pedagogies and the latest learning technologies, to enrich the student experience.” He is also winner of the 2011 University of Adelaide Award for Excellence in Support of the Student Experience.

Allison Cowin is an NHMRC Senior Research Fellow and Professor of Regenerative Medicine at the University of South Australia. Prof Cowin is a leading researcher in the area of wound healing and scar formation. Prof Cowin is Program Leader of the Wound Management Innovation CRC and project leader in the CRC for Cell Therapy Manufacturing developing new approaches to heal wounds. Prof Cowin is an Editorial Advisory Board member and Associate Editor of the American Journal “Wound Repair and Regeneration” and is Editor of the Australian Journal: Wound Practice & Research. She is an invited member of the international expert panel for the Wound Healing and Management node of the Joanna Briggs Institute. Prof Cowin was the founder and inaugural President of the Australasian Wound & Tissue Repair Society and is the founding director and CSO of AbRegen Pty Ltd: a company that is commercialising new wound technology.

Dr Allan M Cyna is a Senior Specialist Anaesthetist at the Women’s and Children’s Hospital, Adelaide, and Nepean Hospital, Sydney; a Clinical Associate Professor at the University of Sydney, Director of studies, South Australian Society of Hypnosis; and Chair of the ‘Communication in Anaesthesia’ Special Interest Group of ANZCA (the Australian and New Zealand College of Anaesthetists), the ASA and NZSA (Australian and New Zealand Society of Anaesthetists).  His primary clinical interest is the anaesthesia management of children with major burns. He has published a number of articles on the use of hypnosis and hypnotic language in the medical setting and is editor-in-chief of the leading book on this topic (Handbook of Communication in Anaesthesia and Critical Care, published by Oxford University Press; Cyna, Andrew, & Tan, 2011).”

Dr Daniel Harvie is an Assistant Professor at the Faculty of Health Sciences and Medicine, Bond University.  Daniel is focussed on brain-based contributors to pain, and on developing brain-targeting treatments using modern technologies, such as virtual reality. His work has focused primarily on the problem of chronic pain, an arena that has shed significant light on the nature of pain in general. Daniel is also a commissioning editor for the world’s most influential pain-related web and social media presence bodyinmind.org.
