This presentation will draw on a program of scar research and evidence that highlights the importance of outliers (patient and clinician perspectives that are different to the norm or average) and what this can tell us. Three lessons learned from outliers will be discussed including the potential to transform practice, greater understanding of the diversity of patient experiences, and importance of ‘the trusted health professional’ in scar rehabilitation. These lessons point to the need to overcome existing challenges in conducting scar research and understanding scar processes better, drawing on evidence from fields including implementation and complexity science.
